Whether crossing a checkpoint or driving to a clinic nearby, people in our communities risk their safety just to access basic care, including care that supports safer sex and bodily autonomy.

The War on Our Bodies

Love should never require a passport, a checkpoint, or a paycheck. But in South Texas, even basic care comes at a cost.

Barriers to Care

  • Only 4 of 32 South Texas counties have a Title X clinic—forcing many to travel hours just to access birth control or STI testing.
  • The average cost of an out-of-state abortion for someone in South Texas is over $2,000–more than many in South TX earn in a month.
  • South Texans must travel between 470 to 870 miles one way to the nearest abortion clinic.
  • There are 19 permanent interior Border Patrol checkpoints across South Texas, along with pop-up traffic checkpoints and roving patrols that intimidate people out of seeking care.

Disinformation & Surveillance

  • Texas funds “fake clinics” designed to mislead people and block abortion access.
  • Your phone, your browser and your apps are being used to criminalize abortion. Law enforcement deliberately works with tech companies such as Google, to collect your data in order to see how you access and share information about abortion.
  • Texas continues to threaten people who help others seek and access abortion care, and has attempted to restrict what can be shared online about abortion.
